Wow, it's been a whirlwind week with meetings about the launch of the 3TV News at 10pm newscast. Here's what we worked on this week... staffing the show, promotion plan for on-air and online, content and development plan for the Website, chose and outlined sets for the newscast, first draft of background graphics for the set were created, set pieces were ordered, technical discussions on how to use iPhones and iPads during the newscast and make it look and sound TV quality have been ongoing. Carey Peña among being a part of all of the above and making the move has been setting up and conducting interviews and getting stories ready. We're also working with Fields Moseley to get him to Arizona to shoot promos, get situated and oh yes, he needs to find a house to live in. Minor details :)

In a nutshell... we're making progress and are very excited about the new 3TV News at 10pm newscast!

Here's a week in review update from 3TV News at 10pm Producer, Jason Berry...
You might be surprised at all the planning that goes into launching a newscast. Over the past week, I’ve been involved in the following discussions:

  • How long will it take to build stands for the flat-screen TV monitors we want to have in the studio?
  • What’s the best way to start the show?  A cold open (where we tell viewers what stories are coming up using videos and soundbites)?  The best piece of video we’ve got?  Carey and Fields on camera going straight into the day’s top stories?
  • What, exactly, constitutes a “night” look for a set background?
  • How will a hand-held camera operator maneuver around the set we’ve designed?
  • Is a side-screen rundown (a la ESPN) worth the hassle?
  • What is the appropriate font size and shape for that graphic?
  • Is the spotlight on the 3TV News at 10 animations appropriately centered?
  • Should we keep the moon or lose the moon in one of our set pieces? (Decision: Lose the moon!) Where on set should we put the table for scripts and computers?
  • When can the lighting guy get here?
  • What’s the best way for our viewers to share their pictures and videos with us?
  • How will we look different from the 9 pm news?

And that’s just the staging of it. Content is still king in the news world. And when all those questions are answered, we still have to put on an informative, interesting newscast. That will be our biggest challenge every day. And it’s the one I’ve given the most thought to.

As we go into the week of August 8th we'll continue to activate our plans and share details step by step by several staff members. And, hopefully by the end of the week we'll have a lot of these things in place. The week of August 15th will be filled with rehearsals and testing out our equipment, lighting, audio, camera shots, etc. Then, ready or not we're on air August 22, 2011 at 10pm. Stay tuned...
