PHOENIX -- Police are investigating a car crash in Phoenix that killed one person and injured three others early Saturday morning.

It occurred shortly after midnight on 43rd Avenue near Bell Road.

Police said a Nissan Sentra was southbound in the curb lane of 43rd Avenue and drove through the Bell Road intersection. The 24-year-old male driver, Jose Manriquez-Gomez, apparently realized he missed his turn and attempted to make a U-turn from the curb lane.

Police said the Nissan turned directly into the path of a southbound Hyundai Santa Fe, which was in the inside lane. The Hyundai collided with the driver's side of the Nissan.

Manriquez-Gomez was transported to a nearby hospital for immediate medical treatment but died shortly after arrival, police said.

The passengers in the Nissan, ages 16 and 18, were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The 19-year-old driver of the Hyundai was transported to a hospital with minor injuries and evaluated for impairment. Police said it does not appear impairment was a factor in the crash.

The collision is still under investigation.
