PHOENIX -- A man was killed and a woman and child were injured in a rollover crash on Interstate 17 Saturday afternoon.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, a 2004 Volkswagen was traveling north in the Bell Road exit lane around 2:45 p.m. when its left rear tire failed.
The driver, 21-year-old Estefania Murrieta, of Phoenix, reportedly lost control of the Volkswagen and veered left, striking the side of a northbound 1999 Chevrolet van in the adjacent lane.
According to DPS, the van rolled multiple times before coming to a rest on its roof on the off-ramp.
The driver of the van, 42-year-old Michael Peters, of Phoenix, was killed. His passengers, 43-year-old Felicia Peters and a 7-year-old boy, were transported to a hospital with injuries.
DPS said Felicia Peters was not wearing her seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. The boy had a minor injury.
Estefania was wearing her seat belt and was not injured.
The northbound lanes of I-17 were closed at Greenway Road for much of the day. The freeway was reopened at 7 p.m., according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
