PHOENIX -- Investigators believe alcohol may have been a factor in a deadly crash in Phoenix Monday morning.
It happened shortly after 4 a.m. near 35th Avenue and McLellan Boulevard, which is between Glendale Avenue and Bethany Home Road.
Aerial video from Chopper 3 showed two mangled vehicles, a gray 2004 four-door Toyota and a blue 2003 Saturn Vue SUV, sitting in the middle of 35th Avenue. Both vehicles sustained major front-end damage.
The 23-year-old woman who was driving the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene. She has been identified as Nancy Pina Patino.
According to Phoenix police, Patino was traveling southbound on 35th Avenue when the vehicle drifted left of center and hit the Saturn head-on.
While detectives do not believe speed was a factor in the crash, they do think impairment was. Police spokesman Officer James Holmes said the preliminary investigation reveals Patino may have been drinking.
There are indications Patino may not have been properly restrained inside the vehicle.
The 17-year-old female passenger in the SUV was transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The 19-year-old male driver received minor injuries and remained at the scene. Police said both were wearing their seat belts.
