GLENDALE -- One man was killed and another wounded in a shooting at a Glendale apartment complex Sunday afternoon, according to police.
The shooting reportedly happened on Olive Avenue near 65th Avenue after a fight between two groups escalated. Police are investigating what led up to the fight.
Police did not have anyone in custody Sunday evening and said it was unclear how many people fled the area.
"I heard the shots," said Fernando Hernandez, who was inside his apartment at the time. "He was my friend, my neighbor. I feel terrible."
Hernandez looked through his window after hearing the shots but did not realize his friend was involved until he went outside.
"When I walked down the stairs, his body was lying on the floor," he said. "I've never seen anything like this in my life. I just saw him at 1 (p.m.)."
The neighborhood was rattled after gunfire erupted in broad daylight on an otherwise quiet Sunday.
"I'm trying to go back into my apartment, but I'm scared to go in there because I don't know what's going on," Samella Benrett said.
Hernandez's daughter, Erika Castellano, said she hopes there will be more vigilance in the neighborhood for the sake of her 60-year-old father and the other residents.
"No matter where you live anymore, you've got people getting angry, and they can't solve their problems talking so they use firepower," Eugene VanLaningham said. "Time to move."
