SURPRISE -- Investigators are trying to determine if impairment or speed were factors in an early morning crash that put a person in the hospital early Wednesday morning.
It happened at about 1 a.m.
According to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, the driver lost control of his or her car and slammed into a brick wall in the area of 115th Avenue and Bell Road.
Video from the scene showed the car sitting in the median, its windshield shattered and its front end badly damaged.
The driver suffered life-threatening injuries. That person was air-lifted to John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital.
The driver was the only person in the car.
Bell Road was closed between 115th Avenue and Del Webb Boulevard for several hours but has since reopened.
The investigation is ongoing.
