Rio Salado Dental Hygiene School offering free cleanings for Tertulia Elementary students

PHOENIX (Sept. 7, 2010) – School is back in session and students are back in the classroom. Unfortunately, some students are suffering from dental problems and finding it difficult to concentrate. To help alleviate the pain and keep kids attentive during class, the Rio Salado College School of Dental Hygiene is hosting Give Kids a Smile on Friday, Sept. 10 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Rio Salado’s dental hygiene staff and students invited approximately 130 students from Tertulia Elementary School in Phoenix to the college’s clinic for free cleanings and to learn about proper dental hygiene. At Give Kids a Smile, the Tertulia students also will receive a gift pack, which includes a new tooth brush, toothpaste, floss and other hygiene items.

“It’s never too early to teach children about proper dental hygiene,” said Liz Kaz, director and faculty chair of Rio Salado College School of Dental Hygiene. “We want to teach these children good oral hygiene habits while they are young so they are in the classroom instead of the nurse’s office.”

Rio Salado’s dental hygiene students spend time in the classroom setting, as well as practicing dental hygiene on patients from the community at the school’s clinic. The school offers dental cleanings for $25, and some students volunteer their time providing cleanings for homeless patients at the Central Arizona Shelter Services and children at the Dave Pratt Dental Clinic.
