GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Authorities say a Phoenix police officer was forced to open fire on a suspect while in Glendale. It happened Sunday afternoon in a neighborhood at 71st Avenue and Colter Street.

Officials are being tight-lipped about the circumstances but said a Phoenix fire investigator wanted to talk to him about an arson case.

Glendale police said while in the backyard of the residence, Jeff Lusk advanced toward Officer Nickolas Gombar with a piece of jagged glass in his hand.

Lusk, 26, was shot in the abdomen and was critically injured.

He was released from the hospital Tuesday night and booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail on two counts of aggravated assault on police officers.
