Bicyclist killed by SUV was ASU student; driver not at fault

TEMPE – An Arizona State University student was killed after being struck by an SUV while riding his bicycle in Tempe on Monday evening.

Police tell 3TV the man was in the eastbound lane of University near Ash at the time of the collision just after 7 p.m. Witnesses say the victim may have crossed the street against a red light.

University was restricted from Mill Avenue to Ash and northbound Ash was restricted at University during the investigation.

The bicyclist has been identified as Christopher Volpe, a 24-year-old ASU student.

3TV has learned that the driver, identified as Harlyn Jackson, remained at the scene after the crash. Police have determined that he was not at fault.
