PHOENIX – Three men are in the hospital after a chess game turned violent.

It happened at about 11 p.m. Thursday outside a Chuy’s restaurant near Seventh Street and Greenway Parkway.

According to police, two of the three men had placed wagers on the game.

Investigators said the loser of that game got up and stabbed his opponent twice. That man’s friend stepped in and tried to help, but he, too, was stabbed.

Witnesses caught the suspect and held him down until police arrived on the scene. The suspect was somehow injured.

Both of the victims and the suspect were taken to local hospitals. Their conditions were not immediately available.

Police have not released the names of anybody involved in the incident.
