Training program gives brain a workout, too

Walking, running or going to the gym are just some of the things people do to get in shape, but did you ever stop to think that your mind might also need a tune-up?
New York City-based personal trainer Michael Gonzalez Wallace showed some Valley residents how to do his program, Neuromuscular Progressive Strength Training.
"In the beginning you're like it's too easy, but within five minutes you sweat," Rachel Hadar said.
Hadar has being doing Wallace's workout program for about a year.
His exercises are designed to work on balance, coordination, muscle strength and cardiovascular.
"In each movement you're going to move 35 muscles at the same time, so then your body is going to get used to that sword of motion," Wallace said.
The program offers four different exercise levels ranging from beginner to advanced moves.
Wallace says anyone can do it, and it's especially good for people with certain medical conditions like fibromyalgia and arthritis.
"It's just challenging, but as you do it more, you get stronger and more balance," Pamela Ward said.
The program also gives the brain a workout.
Wallace says doing different upper and lower body movements at once forces your brain to be mentally engaged.
"I saw that you could take it at an easy level and get to a more complex level," Rolando Zee said.
Wallace recommends doing the program at least three times a week for 30 minutes.
"Your joints are going to get very strong," Wallace said. "Everything is now impacting joints and we're just trying to build that neuromuscular system,"
"It's great," Melissa Hauser said. "It's a lot of technology -- good for muscles and toning."
Wallace's Neuromuscular Progressive Strength Training program is available on DVD.
