Evening Hiking
Maricopa County residents can now hike into the evening at county parks.
Starting this month, trails in the Parks and Recreation Department's 10 parks will stay open after dusk until 8 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays.
On Fridays and Saturdays, the trails will remain open until 10 p.m.
The initial idea was to extend trail hours to allow hikes during summer evenings, when it is cooler.
However, extended hours will now last year-round so visitors can also enjoy trails and evening programs during winter months when the sun sets earlier, officials said.
The department urged those planning to use trails at night to stay hydrated, to hike with others familiar with the trail system, and to tell family members the routes they plan to use and when they plan to return.
The day-use entry fee at county parks is $6 per vehicle.
Locations and details on programs at county parks are available at maricopa.gov/parks http://maricopa.gov/parks or 602-506-2930.
