Chefs Justin Beckett, Matt Carter, Danielle Leoni, Gio Osso and Jesse Hansen have been named as the 2014 Ripe Award winners by the Phoenix Art Museum and the Men’s Arts Council.
For the second consecutive year, the two cultural arts groups will honor the chefs’ achievements at an event on Thursday, Jan. 23 at the Phoenix Art Museum.
Each year, a list of nominees is compiled by museum representatives, and the official judges deliberate privately to make the final selection. The 2014 judges includes two food/dining writers from The Arizona Republic (Karen Fernau and Jennifer McClellan) and two representatives from the Phoenix Art Museum and Men’s Arts Council.
Winners are chosen based on culinary creativity and passion. The chefs are anticipated to open new restaurants and culinary projects, or continue to earn recognition for existing projects. Past winners cannot be considered.
While Arizona is home to many long-standing and pioneering chefs, Ripe aims to seed the future of the culinary scene by acknowledging the next crop of new leaders.
“Their passion for food, Phoenix and every kind of dining keep the the Valley’s foodie foundation in the spotlight,” said Men’s Arts Council representative Ryan O'Donovan.
This year awards ceremony and event will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Attendees can taste signature dishes from this year's winning chefs as well as sip on wines from Arizona winemakers. Tickets are $70 and available for purchase at www.ripephx.com.
