Maricopa County is part of a nationwide adoption event involving 200 animal shelters and rescue groups in 14 communities across the United States. Maddie's Fund, the foundation behind Maddie's Pet Adoption Days, has earmarked $10 million as a way to give back to the participating organizations, donating up to $2,000 per adopted dog or cat. Eight percent of the Maddie's Adoption Days subsidies will be donated to the Fix. Adopt .Save. campaign. The goal of the event is to find loving homes for 10,000 homeless dogs and cats throughout the U.S. in one weekend by waiving all adoption fees for the public.
A Miniature Schnauzer named Maddie inspired a $300 million legacy dedicated to giving every dog and cat in the United States what she had: a loving home. Maddie was a beloved family member of David Duffield, founder of Workday and PeopleSoft, and his wife, Cheryl. For the last four years, Maddie's Fund has sponsored Maddie's Pet Adoption Days to honor her memory.

Tess Masters - The Blender Girl
Cook, writer, and actor Tess Mastewrs has just released her debut cookbook, "The Blender Girl," building on her recipes from her blockbuster site, www.healthyblenderrecipes.com. In the book, Tess uses her lively, down-to-earth approach to share ways to make quick and easy meals that are gluten-free and vegan. Smoothies, soups, and spreads are a given in a blender cookbook, but this surprisingly versatile collection also includes appetizers, salads, and main dishes with a blended component. Whether it's the cream of cauliflower soup that has tasters insisting, "There's gotta be dairy in this," or the 10-minute chocolate torte that makes chocoholics weak at the knees, Tess's recipes are healthy and fun.
Tess will be visiting Phoenix as part of her national tour, and will be doing a signing at the Le Creuset Signature Store in Scottsdale, where she will be giving away a 14-inch serving platter to one guest. She will also be doing demos and signings at the Williams-Sonoma stores in both Phoenix and Scottsdale.
Tess will be making the following appearances in the Phoenix Area:
Saturday, May 31
-1 p.m. at Le Creuset Signature Store, Scottsdale Quarter, 15323 N. Scottsdale Rd., Ste. 140 Scottsdale, AZ 85254, 480-948-1439
-4 p.m. Williams-Sonoma, Phoenix Biltmore, 2502 E. Camelback Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85016, 602-955-8400
Sunday, June 1
-1 p.m. Williams-Sonoma Scottsdale, 7014 E. Camelback Rd., Ste. 1236, Scottsdale, AZ 85251. 480-425-7756
-2 cups (480ml) water
-1/2 cup (120ml) freshly squeezed lemon juice, plus more to taste
-3 cups (480g) diced ripe pineapple, plus more to taste
-1 tbsp. minced ginger
-2 tbsp. agave nectar, plus more to taste
Throw all of the ingredients into your blender and blast on high for about one minute, until well combined. Tweak flavors to taste (you may want more lemon juice, pineapple, or agave nectar). Strain through a fine-mesh sieve or nut milk bag, chill and serve.
One of the star recipes on my website, this super-easy pudding is zesty and refreshing. You don't need key limes to make it (you get that flavor by combining limes and lemons). If you are a tart-at-heart (like me) and love sharp, tangy notes, you're going to be in heaven. Those of you who like your citrus on the sweeter side may want to add more agave nectar. Either way, this is sublime.
Key Lime Pudding:
-1/3 cup (80ml) light agave nectar, plus more to taste
-1/2 cup (120ml) freshly squeezed lemon juice
-1/2 cup (120ml) freshly squeezed lime juice
-2 ripe avocados, pitted and peeled (see note, below)
-2 cups (285g) chopped bananas (about two bananas)
-1 tsp. finely grated lemon zest
-1 tsp. finely grated lime zest
Throw all of the ingredients into your blender and puree on high for one to 2 minutes, until well combined. You may need to stop your machine and scrape down the sides of the container to ensure everything is incorporated evenly. Tweak the sweetener to taste. Divide the pudding among four serving glasses and chill in the fridge for about 3 hours to thicken. Serve the same day, chilled, to avoid oxidation. note: This pudding works best with ripe avocados that don't have any brown discolorations. Overripe or bruised avocados detract from the taste.
