PHOENIX --Get fit. Go green. Get off the grid. That's the slogan for Scottsdale's only "green" gym, called Off the Grid Fitness.

There are only three other gyms like it in the country. The exercise equipment converts the energy you produce, your “sweat-equity,” into energy that can be returned to the grid.

The exercise equipment is self-powered, with muscle power replacing power from the grid."These elliptical trainers have a little converter right there," says owner Eric Guilleminault. "So you start working out like you would on an elliptical, pushing with your legs, quick-starting it. The energy that you're producing goes directly into that box. And that box goes to our solar converter that hooks up to our facility and creates some electricity."

Guilleminault says he has been working for some time to get this "green gym" concept up and running. "This is something I believe in," he says. "I believe in the green. I believe in the lifestyle."

Off the Grid may be energy-conscious but it still has all the amenities of other gyms, like group exercise and personal training.

Off the Grid Fitness is located at 10050 N. Scottsdale Rd, Suite 111, Scottsdale AZ, 85253.
