SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- A surfboard may not seem very useful in the desert, but it is with the new surfboard workout.
Featured at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Resort and Spa, the surfboard workout helps improve stability, balance and strength. Mainly, the workout helps stabilize joints including the ankles, knees and hips.
“It’s fairly new,” said Vera Bond, a fitness instructor featured Wednesday on "Good Morning! Arizona." “It was first found on the Shark Tank [TV show], and we’ve had it here since January.”
All of the work is done on a SURFSET® board, which is an actual board used by surfers.
“It’s so unique and it’s so fun. And then we have the screen with the ocean so you kind of feel like you’re right in the ocean,” Bond said.
One you’re finished surfing, it’s important to use a suspension trainer to work muscles including the chest, back, biceps, triceps, shoulders, quads, and hamstrings, said Craig Cristello, an exercise physiologist and Fairmont’s one-on-one trainer.
“The surfing class isn’t going to engage your muscle groups the same way that this does,” Cristello said.
