PHOENIX -- In eight weeks, four guys traveled to 16 states in one old motorhome, hoping to catch a lot of fish.
Chase McGarey, Pete Wilson, Matt Warzynski and Jack Fijan went on the fishing trip of a lifetime and documented it all on video.
"I was working for a TV channel up in Minnesota and we're just working on fishing shows, and it just crossed my mind every show is the same," Wilson said. "It's the same professional fishermen out there fishing. Let's show a different side of fishing. ... Let's show a different perspective."
The four Phoenix natives got together to create "Hitch 'N' Fish," a film that would show America through fishing.
"People have such a false perception of the world we live in," Wilson said. "When you drive around the country, you'll be surprised how many good people are out there that are willing to help and willing to open their doors to you."
To fund the trip, they posted their project on Kickstarter with the goal of raising $33,000 in 24 days. They exceeded that goal by $100.
"That got us kind of one step in the right direction for this journey that we went on," Fijan said.
They hopped into a 1988 Ford Chassis in northern Minnesota last summer, and began the trip that would span thousands of miles and take them to fishing spots they never knew existed.
"We drove around the country and just met people and they were like, 'Hey, you don't know this guy but he'll take you out fishing there and this guy will take you out fishing here.' It's just word of mouth. That's what fishing's all about so we tried to grasp that," Wilson said.
Although they didn't plan every detail and their RV was unreliable, the only fears the men had were not getting great moments on film and not catching any fish.
"We all kind of knew this was something that's a once in a lifetime opportunity," Warzynski said.
Now they are trying to sell "Hitch 'N' Fish" as a TV show or documentary.
"All it takes is one person to look at this as a producer and say, 'You know what? There is something there,' " Wilson said. "It's not about fishing; it's about people and it's about America."
