PHOENIX -- This year's higher fuel costs won't stop the Herzogs from hitting the road on their 13th consecutive summer-long RV trip.
Author Brad Herzog, 43, and his wife, Amy, 42, are making their annual cross-country road trip, for the 13th consecutive summer. It will take them to 16 different states over the course of six weeks as Brad writes, researches and blogs for one of the nation's most popular travel websites GoRVing.com .
Recent studies show that, despite high gas prices, an RV vacation is still less expensive than many traditional vacations.
This year is a second honeymoon of sorts for Brad and Amy because for the first time in a while they are traveling without their two sons (who are attending summer camp.) In keeping with a new trend in RVing, they will be driving a sleek, fuel-efficient motor home -- a 25-foot 2013 Winnebago Via built on a Mercedes-Benz chassis with a turbo-diesel engine. The Via gets as much as 18 miles per gallon of gas.
Brad says they also save money by avoiding the high cost of hotels and restaurants. The Via comes equipped with a full kitchen, as well as two flat screen TVs, energy efficient LED lighting and a high-tech "infotainment" monitor.
Brad Herzog is an award-winning author of three travel memoirs about his journeys through small-town America. His latest is "Turn Left at the Trojan Horse" . American Book Review describes Brad's travel memoirs as, "...the new classics of American travel writing." Brad's other books include "States of Mind" and "Small World."
Brad claims "In my books I explore the nooks and crannies of the country, and the best way to do that is in a house on wheels"
Because of their vast experience traveling by RV -- more than 100,000 miles through 48 states -- The Herzogs have been designated the "National Explore America Family" by the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association. This summer, among other activities, Brad and Amy will be climbing the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado, gawking at the Grand Canyon and cruising on a riverboat along the Mississippi River. They will also visit everything from the Gateway Arch and the Las Vegas strip to the Mall of America and the Field of Dreams.
