PHOENIX -- If you lived anywhere near Phoenix 16 years ago today, you'll remember the strange sighting of the so-called "Phoenix lights."

Years later, questions continue to swirl around the mysterious light formation. Some thought it was military aircraft; others believed it was something supernatural or alien. Some simply didn't know what to think.

Wednesday marks the anniversary of that strange sighting. So on Good Morning Arizona, we consulted  an expert to talk about her theories about those mysterious lights.

Dr. Lynne Kitei was a medical doctor, who set her practice aside to be an investigator, author and documentary filmmaker. Her career change was inspired by those mysterious lights.

"To me it was just investigating, trying to find logical explanations," she says."I don't know what it is; I only know that it is. It's time we get this out in the open, and address it and accept it and study it so we can find out who's driving these things and also move forward in our own evolution."

Scott Pasmore asked Dr. Kitei her theories about what was behind the phenomenon.

"Most things can be explained. Only a small percentage of things that are anomalies can not," she says. "But when we have this sighting, that went throughout the entire state.Thousands and thousands of people saw it, it was at roof-top level, a mile to two mile-wide formation of lights that seemed to be attached to something, and  It's unexplained. And it's happening worldwide in other countries that are much more open to this kind of phenomena, as being un-earthly."

"I ended up pushing my entire medical career aside for four years to try to find a logical source of meaning for what I witnessed," she told Scott. "I have yet to find it. If anything it opened up a whole world for me that ultimately I felt obliged as an educator and a scientist to share it with the public."

Kitei's documentary "Phoenix Lights Documentary"  will be screened this weekend in honor of the anniversary of the Phoenix lights. The film shows this Sunday, March 17 at 1 pm at the Harkins Shea Theaters, at Scottsdale Road and Shea Boulevard.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A and book signing with Kitei.
