PHOENIX -- NASCAR season will soon be getting underway. And this year, Phoenix International Raceway is teaming up with local driver Michael McDowell to kick off the race track’s 50th anniversary.
"This is my hometown race," says McDowell, who hails from Glendale. "I'm excited to be at Phoenix Raceway with the car, and help celebrate its 50th anniversary. It's really fun."
McDowell said a win would be very special to him. "It would be huge," he says. "I've been coming here for years and I've got lots of friends and family here."
McDowell will be sponsored by PIR's 50th anniversary in this weekend's upcoming Daytona 500.
McDowell also talked to us about his involvement in the "I am Second" campaign, a movement meant to inspire people to live for God and for others. "It's just a website that has people's testimony about their faith, from all different walks of life," he says. "It's just a real cool tool that I'm able to share with fans, and bring it to the NASCAR community."
Monday, Phoenix International Raceway announced that CNBC’s “The PROFIT,” the popular entrepreneurial reality series returning for a second season on February 25, has joined the track’s team of corporate partners.
As part of the new relationship, “The PROFIT” will act as the official title sponsor for the track’s March 2 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event: ‘The Profit on CNBC 500, Presented by Small Business Fueling America.’
Phoenix International Raceway staged its first professional race on March 22, 1964. The race track has evolved many times over the ensuing 50 years, and has hosted races for virtually every major sanctioning body in American motor sports.
The year-long 50th Anniversary campaign will be a celebration of PIR’s relationships with its fans, community partners and the racing industry. Many of the greatest drivers to ever turn a lap on PIR’s one-mile oval, along with other racing personalities, will be invited to return for race weekends and other events throughout the coming year.
