PHOENIX -- This is one of the many projects you can do at The Home Depot area at Arizona's Ultimate Women's Expo this weekend at the Phoenix Convention Center.

You will need:

  • Wine Bottle with cap or cork
  • Make-A-Lamp Kit (Home Depot Electrical Department)
  • Lamp shade
  • Drill
  • 1/4-inch drill bit
  • Wire-cutting tool
  • Screwdriver
  • 5/8-inch diamond tile drill bit
  • 10-inch lamp harp

Instructions:
Rinse out wine bottle.

On a table with clamps or on a towel with a partner's assistance, lay down wine bottle front facing down and make sure bottle is secure.

Set the diamond tile drill bit at a 45-degree angle close to the bottom back of the bottle; slowly begin drilling the hole. Then slowly angle up until drill bit is even with glass to create a complete hole. Do not apply too much pressure, allow the bit to do the work.
(This bit works like a wet saw, so while drilling sprinkle some water on the bit and glass.)

Drill a 1/4-inch hole in bottle cap, as well.

Feed lamp cord's loose wire ends through bottom hole, up through bottle neck.

Insert threaded nipple through bottle cap. Place a locknut underneath bottle cap to secure threaded nipple. Stack base of lamp harp and another locknut.

Thread socket cap onto nipple. Attach wires to the two screws on the sides of the socket by bending the end of each wire into a "U" shape, place wire around screw, making sure conducting end is under the screw. The ribbed wire goes to the silver screw; the smooth wire goes to the gold screw.

Cover the wires. Slide down the cardboard socket interior and socket shell.

Attach the lamp harp to lamp harp base.

Insert light bulb.

Place lamp shade on top of harp and secure with harp finial.
