PHOENIX -- Do you know how much sugar your kids are eating?
Dr. Andrea Purcell showed 3TV's Kaley O'Kelley easy ways to spot products that have high amounts of sugar and how to avoid dangerous artificial sweeteners in your kids' foods.
She explained that selecting low-sugar or calorie-modified items will not necessarily promote a more nutritious diet. Items that are "sugar-free," and "no sugar added" are often sweeter than products sweetened with real sugar. This leads to the development of a "sweet tooth."
Rules of thumb
- Avoid artificial sweeteners
- Read the detailed nutrient label
- To determine sugar content review amount of sugar per serving as well as grams of carbohydrates per serving
- Make an informed decision
