PHOENIX --The four seasons of color analysis is pretty straightforward, and you can easily do your own by following a few simple steps.

First, define whether you are a cool or a warm type by examining your skin undertone. This doesn't mean looking in the mirror. That won't tell you what you need to know.

"The skin undertone is determined by things like hemoglobin, carotene and melanin," stylist Devy Walker of About Face Boutique in Scottsdale explained. "The composition of these three pigments is defined by genetics. It will always remain the same. Skin color (or overtone) can change because of things like exposure to sun, illness, even blood pressure."

Your undertone can be determined by looking at the veins on your inner wrist.

If your veins appear to be green, it's likely you have a warm undertone. This means you are a spring or autumn  type.

Those of you who have have blue veins are considered cool, also known as a summer or winter.

  • Green veins on inner wrist = warm (spring, autumn)
  • Blue veins on inner wrist = cool (summer, winter)

To figure out whether you are a light or a dark type, define the brightness of your eyes and your natural hair color.

If you're considered one who has a cool undertone and your eyes and hair are dark, it's likely you're a winter. If you're considered one who has a cool undertone and your eyes and hair are light, then it's likely you're a summer.

If you're considered one who has a warm undertone and your eyes and hair are dark, it's likely you're an autumn. If you're considered one who has a warm undertone and your eyes and hair are light then it's likely you're a spring.

  • Cool + dark = winter
  • Cool + light = summer
  • Warm + dark = autumn
  • Warm + light = spring

Now that you're armed with this information, finding the best colors for you should be simple.

Winter types should wear white, black, navy blue, red and shocking pink. For lighter colors, wear icy tones rather than pastels. Avoid subdued tones like beige, orange and gold. When it comes to jewelry, silver is your color.

Summer types should choose pastels and soft neutrals with rose and blue undertones. Lavender, taupe, powder pink and powder blue look great on summer types. Black and orange do not. Summer types should be daring with lots of different accessories.

Fall types should select colors with golden undertones, like camel, beige, orange, gold and dark brown. Avoid colors with blue tones, like navy. You, too, should experiment with jewelry. Gold jewelry is a good choice for you.

Spring types can wear warm colors like camel, peach, golden-yellow and golden brown.  Stay away from dark, dull colors. Do not wear black and white. Keep jewelry simple and wear gold. Light colors look best on you.

Wear reds for all of your personality traits. Blue-red conveys assertiveness. An orange-red would be worn by someone who is lively.

While everyone says black is slimming, it's really only recommended for winter types.  Everyone else should choose other dark colors to get the slimming effect.
