MESA, Ariz. -- If you're looking for something unique for the family to do this week during spring break, you might want to check out "Spark! Mesa's Festival of Creativity." It's a free, immersive event for all ages celebrating the arts, innovation and creativity through activities, music, original performances, and interactive art.
"It's a great place to immerse yourself in creative experience," says Cindy Ornstein, Executive Director of the Mesa Arts Center. "It's hands-on. You see these amazing things people have made."
Visitors can see the Austin Bike Zoo, which includes a giant rideable rattlesnake bike that measures 80 feet in length. Also featured are the many butterflies ranging in height from 10 to 18 feet, and animated bat and owl bikes.
Check out performances with spoken word and hip hop by Phonetic Spit, a stilt-walking performance by Carpetbag Brigade, and a zoo of Weaving the Wild characters in detailed frog, lizard, bird and insect costumes. Or, enjoy a variety of popular local and regional musical acts in Western, Rock, Blues and Jazz that will take place throughout the event.
Folks can get hands-on with a jungle scene color-by-number mural, two giant community-built Lego giraffes, and a finger knitting porject.
Interact with the art in the Wonder Dome or The Amyloid Project. Play along with TubberKnockers by Doug Boyd, a musical playground, or go inside MADE Garden, created entirely out of recycled materials.
"We want every person to know that they have a creative spark inside them," says Ornstein.
