PHOENIX -- They look glamorous and instantly enhance your eyes but most women don't have the time or patience to apply fake eyelashes every single day. You don't have to with eyelash extensions. The service isn't cheap but some women swear by this beauty regimen.

Heather Gutier is an eyelash extension specialist in Phoenix. The owner of Beauty Secrets by Heather, she's a certified trainer who teaches others how to apply lash extensions correctly.

Individual lash extensions are made in different lengths, curl sizes and thickness.

"You can choose to go natural, dramatic or to make your eyes appear larger than they really are," Gutier explained. "You could go for the cat-eye look."

This illusion is created by placing shorter lashes on the inner lid and gradually applying longer lashes toward the outer edge of the eye. Depending on the lash technician, Gutier says a full set of eyelash extensions can take anywhere from one to two hours.

To keep them looking great and natural, they do need to be maintained. A lash retouch, also known as a fill, can take up to an hour.

Depending on how fast your natural lash growth cycle is, a retouch can be done anywhere from two to five weeks. Keep in mind, your natural lashes shed every 60 to 90 days. Once your eyelashes shed, your extension will fall out with them.

"If you wear contact lenses, it is best to remove them before the eyelash extension procedure," Gutier said. "When lashes are applied correctly, they should not hurt or pull."

Gutier shares these tips to follow after you have had a set of eyelash extensions applied.

  • Do not get them wet for at least 48 hours.
  • Avoid steam, sauna and swimming for 48 hours.
  • Keep all oil-based products away from your extensions.
  • Do not tug, twist or pull your extensions.
  • Use only water-based or oil-free facial products.
  • Only use a heated eyelash curler.
  • Wear a sleep mask if you sleep on your side or face.
