PHOENIX -- Look! Up in the sky! It's not a bird or a plane. If you glance up in the skies over Phoenix today, you just might see a bright yellow alien in jeans with one eye looking back down at you. Parents and kids will recognize it as one of the "minions" from the movie "Despicable Me."
The movie studio is getting ready to release a sequel to the popular 2009 animated film and they're celebrating by having a huge blimp fly across the country.
The Despicablimp made its first appearance this past weekend at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards in Los Angeles and then made its way here to Arizona. 3TV's Stella Inger got an up-close look Thursday morning, when it was tethered for a while at Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport.
The blimp flies at an average height of about 1,000 and will travel approximately 20,000 miles in the next few months as it goes coast to coast. It's one of only 15 airships flying in the world today. The Despicablimp is 165 feet long, 55 feet high and 46 feet wide. It also lights up at night.
If you see it you can take a picture and upload it to Despicablimp command, a website dedicated to following the blimp as it crosses the country. Check it out at www.despicablimp.com. If you tweet photos, be sure to use the #despicablimp hashtag.
The site also has information on how the blimp was made, video clips from the upcoming movie, weekly giveaway prizes and there's even a contest to win a trip to the movie premiere in Los Angeles.
"Despicable Me 2" opens in theaters July 3.
