GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Calling all teddy bears! Saturday is teddy bear day in historic downtown Glendale.

For the 9th year in a row, downtown merchants and the Glendale Convention & Visitors Bureau are teaming up to support the Glendale Fire Department's Teddy Bear Trauma Program with a fun-filled day of events.

Local businesses will be accepting donations of teddy bears. In exchange, those who donate can receive plenty of deals, treats and freebies. Attendees are encouraged to start their day at the Glendale Visitor Center, 5800 W. Glenn Drive, Suite 140, where they can pick up a map of participating merchants, coupons and a savings pack for the first 250 families.

"We have about two dozen different teddy bear activities," says Valerie Burns, Bears and More event organizer. You can start at the visitor's center, and pick up list of activities and just make your way around all the different businesses."

All bears will be given to the Glendale Fire Department's Trauma Teddy Program, which offers comfort to young children who have been affected by a traumatic event. In past years, nearly 5,000 teddy bears have been collected at the one-day event.

"All the bears go on our fire trucks," says Mike Young of the  Glendale Fire Department. "It's something we will use if the child is hurt or injured or part of a traumatic event. We use them to calm them down, and we also use the bears to gain their trust."
