CHANDLER -- Bad weather isn't putting a damper on the Chandler Ostrich festival this weekend.
The event is expected to draw a crowd of thousands, and festivities will go on, rain or shine.
But you won't find just ostriches at this event. How about contortionists? Or a guy snapping a mouse trap shut on his tongue? Or another guy hammering a steel spike into his head?
That's just an example of some of the unusual antics the Freakshow Deluxe carnival act is known for.
Good Morning Arizona's Stella Inger got a firsthand look Friday at some of those shocking stunts.
"We specialize in classic carnival sideshow acts", say one performer, known as Tommy Gunn. "Danger, excitement, that kind of thing. You're going to see some amazing, astounding acts from our lovely performers here."
This is 4th year Freakshow Deluxe has appeared at the Ostrich Festival. The troupe is based in Hollywood, and includes acrobats, contortionists, sword-swallowers and stuntmen.
One of their jaw-dropping acts was to lie down on a bed of 300 nails. One performer even encouraged Stella to walk on his back while he endured the bed of nails!
But the Freakshow Deluxe folks assure us that the act is family-friendly, and will appeal to all ages.
There's plenty of entertainment available at the festival. Guests can choose from dozens of activities, including watching ostrich races and sampling ostrich burgers.
The 25th Annual Ostrich Festival will again take place at Chandler’s Tumbleweed Park at the corner of McQueen and Germann (2250 S. McQueen Rd. - just south of the Loop 202 San Tan freeway at McQueen).
The Ostrich Festival Parade and Ostrich Festival Fun Run will take place on Saturday, March 2nd, 2013. Fun Run registration starts at 6:30am and the run starts at 8am with the parade to follow at 10am - both events will be taking place in Downtown Chandler.
Discounts will be available at all local Fry’s Groceries starting February 15th. Family Fun Packs will be sold for $67 (a $17savings) and include 2 adult, 2 youth and 2 all-day carnival ride passes.
Fry’s will also carry $21 All Day Carnival Ride Passes – a $4 savings along with regular priced admission tickets. General admission at the gate will be $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and $7 for youth (ages 5-12) and kids 4 and under are FREE!
