PHOENIX -- The average American generate 4.6 pounds of waste per day and recycles 1.5 pounds. We can do better. We need to do better. That's the message at the heart of America Recycles Day, which happens to be today.

Many people think recycling is difficult, but as Deanne Scotland of 1-800-GOT-JUNK showed 3TV's Yetta Gibson, it doesn't have to be -- especially when you have expert help.

The teams at 1-800-GOT-JUNK know their ... stuff. On average, they keep more than 60 percent of every truckload of junk from the landfills. They sort the junk into viable items to can be donated, e-waste (anything with a cord), and recyclables.

"We donate a lot locally with Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity," Scotland explained.

Many -- perhaps most -- people tend to let their stuff accumulate.

"We really need to just take some time to sort through what we have," Scotland said.

Some items -- like tires and refrigerators -- are recyclable, but require special handling.
