PHOENIX -- If you play your coupons right, you can save big money when you stock up on staples at the grocery store. It's all about strategy and planning.

Coupon expert Mindy Villone says that strategy and planning can help you save money on meat, too. And you don't even need coupons. Just make sure you have room in your freezer.

1. Buy in bulk from Zaycon Foods, an independent food-service company that delivers meat fresh from the farm.  Zaycon sells buy the case. Chicken, for example, is sold in 40-pound cases. If that's too much for you, split it with a friend or neighbor. Prices vary, but are generally much better than what you'll find at grocery stores. Order online at ZayconFoods.com.

2. Stock up on hot dogs and hamburgers in late May and early June. Villone says that's when the prices are lowest.

3. If you see something on sale that's not the cut you want, talk to the butcher. He'll help you out for free.
