PHOENIX -- Buying insurance can be confusing at times. On Good Morning Arizona Tuesday, 3TV's Scott Pasmore talked to an insurance pro to get some tips.
Tip #1: “The first thing I would suggest is understanding whether you have a grandfather plan today,” said Jeff Stelnik, Senior Vice President of strategy, sales, and marketing at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona.
Staying with an old plan has several benefits, as it can be cheaper and have more flexibility in the benefits it offers, Stelnik said. It may also be more helpful to stay with the plan you have instead of purchasing on the exchange.
Tip #2: Insurance plans may seem complicated if you travel a lot. "It’s important to understand, is my doctor in the network and what happens if I travel, because many plans on the exchange will not have an out of network benefit,” Stelnik said.
Tip #3: It is important to understand that purchasers can’t just buy a policy at any time. Some people may wait, then decide they’ll just purchase a policy when they get sick. “It’s only during this open enrollment period that people can enroll in an individual market,” Stelnik said.
