PHOENIX -- The family and friends of Bria Helpley are heartbroken after the young single mother was shot and killed on Saturday.

It happened during what was supposed to be a gathering of old friends.

"She has nothing but love for everybody and it's just a shock that somebody would take her life," said Helpley's sister, Eleanor Galaviz.

Helpley, 26, was killed at her apartment near Monroe and 14th streets.

"She was always there to help everybody, always put everybody before her own needs," said Galaviz.

Hours after the homicide police arrested 27-year-old James Calderon at his East Valley home. Police believe Calderon shot Helpley during a gathering of people who were friends in high school.

Helpley and Calderon apparently got into a verbal altercation before he allegedly shot her.

Calderon's 46-year-old mother, Sandra Calderon was also arrested. She's accused of hindering the investigation by picking her son up after the shooting and trying to dispose of his clothing. Sandra Calderon told police that she took her son's clothes because she wanted to remember the smell of her son in case she never saw him again.

"We understand that parents certainly want to do something for their kids, protect their kids, however when it comes to this kind of incident, any kind of criminal act, you have to draw the line," said Sgt. Steve Martos with the Phoenix Police Dept.

Helpley's six-year-old daughter was not home at the time of the shooting.

James Calderon is facing a charge of second-degree murder.
