PHOENIX –Are you going out of town this Memorial Day weekend?

There is a travel warning for those headed to Mexico.

The U.S. Consulate in Nogales has issued an alert to Americans driving to Puerto Peñasco, commonly known as Rocky Point.

Thousands of Arizonans go to the popular spot each year. The consulate says it has unconfirmed reports of drivers south of the border being stopped at unofficial checkpoints.

Michelle Donati, with AAA, says, “The people manning these checkpoints have just asked for identification and have let travelers on their way. If you do feel like you've come across one of these checkpoints, the consulate is asking that you do report that so they can get further information and provide that to other travelers.”

If you are headed to Rocky Point you are advised to travel on the main highway only during daylight hours.
