Almost every spring, I'm blessed to do a report on a wonderful place called Canaan in the Desert.
Just south of Shea Blvd. on 40th street in Phoenix, this peaceful garden focuses on the crucifixion story. Trails through lush desert plants lead to different stations where stone carvings reveal the last days of Jesus.
There's also a recreation of Mt. Calvary, with three crosses rising into the sky. On Good Friday and Easter, the garden, which is free to all and open everyday, is full of those coming to celebrate and to pray.
All this is the hard work of the Sisters of Mary, a sect of Lutheran nuns. So why am I telling you about this now? Because it's almost Christmas and they also have a very nice manger scene. It's a great place to just spend time, see both the beginning of the greatest story ever told as well as the earthly final chapter.
The phone number is 602-996-4040 and the sisters would love to see you and your family at this, or any time of the year.
Go in peace and have a Merry Christmas.
