LAKE MONTEZUMA, Ariz. – The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help to find the person responsible for abandoning a litter of puppies in a park Wednesday morning.

An Arizona Department of Transportation worker found the five puppies inside a covered box adjacent to the restrooms at Sycamore Community Park in Lake Montezuma. The park is located in the 4100 block of East Beaver Vista Road.

One of the puppies appeared close to death due to the heat, according to sheriff's office spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn.

An animal control officer rushed the puppies to the Sedona Humane Society where they were examined by a veterinarian and received food and water. The staff continues to monitor their condition.

The puppies are about 2 weeks old and described as possible shepherd/pit bull mixes. There is a tri-colored male, a tan-and-black male, a black-and-white male, a tan female, and a black-and-tan female.

D'Evelyn said the box that contained the puppies was yellow and white with "Bacardi" printed on the exterior. A plain white T-shirt covered the box.

Anyone with information about the abandonment of the puppies is asked to contact YCSO at 928-771-3260 or Yavapai Silent Witness at 1-800-932-3232. Refer to case number 11-027975.
