PHOENIX – About two dozen Chihuahuas were found inside a home where an elderly man had been dead for a while.

Arizona Humane Society’s Animal Medical Technicians responded to a call from Phoenix police to help them out at a home where a deceased person was found. He had been dead from natural causes for about two weeks, according to police.

Fourteen live Chihuahuas were found starving inside the home. Three of the dogs are in critical condition and another eight were found dead inside the home.

The three dogs that are in critical condition were taken to the Humane Society’s Sunnyslope facility where veterinarians evaluated the dogs.

Stacie Dabolt, with the Arizona Humane Society, explains, "It's a miracle that they made it. The three that...were isolated in cages are extremely emaciated...the worst we've seen. They're very dehydrated. They were basically...within hours they could have been dead from that situation."

Dabolt says she does not believe the elderly man was a hoarder but he just did not do any spaying or neutering.

The dogs will spend about three days or so at the facility and, after being cleared by vets, should be ready for adoption by the end of the week.
