YUMA, Ariz. (AP) -- Yuma authorities responded to an animal hoarding case and discovered more than 50 cats in a house described as "deplorable."

City spokesman Dave Nash tells the Yuma Daily Sun that city code enforcement officials entered the residence on Oct. 19.

Nash says inspectors found dozens of cats in "unsanitary conditions" that were "unfit for human occupancy." He declined to elaborate.

The Humane Society of Yuma was called to remove the cats.

In all, four animal control officers removed a total of 54 cats, all of which were alive at the time.
