BUCKEYE, Ariz. -- A property owner was taken into custody after nearly 20 emaciated horses were found in the far West Valley Tuesday morning.

After receiving a complaint about a dying horse, the Animal Crimes Investigations Unit of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office conducted a search of the property near Elliot Road and 203rd Avenue near Buckeye.

Sheriff's detectives found an emaciated horse lying on its side. A veterinarian responded and was forced to euthanize the horse.

According to sheriff's office spokesman Lt. Justin Griffin, 18 horses were found emaciated due to malnourishment and neglect. Several others were found dead.

Most of the horses were taken to the sheriff's MASH unit. Four of the horses were taken to a veterinary clinic and are not expected to survive.

Terryl Reding, 68, was taken into custody. He faces one felony and 18 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.

Sheriff's deputies have been at the property at least four times in the past two years after receiving reports of animal abuse.
