SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- A vicious attack forced the victim to be rushed to the hospital.  The victim, a dog named Winston. His attacker, a javelina. it happened in a Scottsdale neighborhood.

Winston, a 6-year-old Airedale terrier rescue, and his dog dad Ken Kelly were unlucky enough to meet one of the reclusive pig-like animals while on their Sunday morning walk near 96th Street and Shea Boulevard. The wash they were walking in runs along Shea.

The javelina ripped Winston open in several places. The vet told Kelly that Winston was very lucky.  One cut just barely missed a major artery in Winston's neck and none of the damage went much past skin deep.

Still, there are lots of stitches and now Kelly is telling the story to keep others on the lookout to avoid more attacks.

"[Winston] comes running down the hill with a javelina chasing him… seeing the blood gushing out from his neck and the javelina and the first thing I thought was, I just got between him and the javelina, waving and scaring him off," said Kelly, adding that Winston was in shock after the attack according to the veterinarian. "He's eating, he's recovering and he's going to make a full recovery.  He's more relaxed and recovered than I am."

Kelly said Winston's vet bill was around $4,000.  He has pet insurance and believes that should cover most of the cost although he would have gladly paid out of pocket to save his best friend.
