SAN TAN VALLEY, Ariz. -- A traffic backup in San Tan Valley on Tuesday wasn't due to an accident or a slow-moving vehicle. Pinal County sheriff's deputies blocked roadways to allow a deer to run to safety.
The Pinal County Sheriff's Office received a report of a "moose or deer" in the south parking lot of Skyline Ranch Elementary School near Hunt Highway and Gary Road.
Deputies responded and located a fallow deer, which is not indigenous to the area and may have escaped from a residence.
According to sheriff's spokesman Tim Gaffney, deputies blocked roadways until the deer made its way to safety. It was last seen running into the desert south of the school.
The Arizona Game and Fish Department is following up on the case.
