PHOENIX -- The pitter-patter of little paws is a common sound at Maricopa County Animal Care and Control's shelters these days. The facilities, especially that shelter on the west side -- are overflowing with small dogs.

There are more than 60 Chihuahuas, terriers and other small breeds in the adoption kennels, many of which are housing four dogs at a time.

MCACC says small dogs, less than 30 pounds, are great for people who live in apartments, as well as those who have backyards. They're a little easier on your budget, too, because they eat less that their larger cousins.

While the dogs might be small enough to snuggle on your lap, their personalities tend to be pretty big.

Dr. Rodrigo Silva, Assistant County Manager, owns small dogs.

“Small dogs are a wonderful addition to a family,” he said in a news release. “They are full of enthusiasm. Adopt one today.”

This weekend only -- March 26-28, dogs under 30 pounds are just $50 to adopt. That fee covers spay or neuter surgery, a rabies vaccination (for puppies older than 3 months) and a dog license (for puppies older than 3 months).
