MESA, Ariz. -- A Mesa man is asking for the public's help to find six puppies that were stolen from his backyard on Saturday.

John Bingham believes he met the thieves face to face the day before they stole his 10-week-old English bulldogs.

Bingham said a couple went to his home to check out a puppy they saw advertised in the newspaper. He suspects they set up the visit to check out his home for the future theft.

"Most people are here about 30 minutes and they were here maybe five minutes, tops," Bingham said.

The breeder believes the dog-nappers went into his backyard through an unlocked gate the next day and used a couple of large near-empty bags of dog food to haul the pups away.

"They could have put three puppies in one bag, three in the other bag, walked out with the bag because both bags of dog food were gone," Bingham said.

He said the puppies are worth $2,000 each. The parents weren't taken.

Bingham is hoping a tip from the public will bring the puppies home and put the puppy-nappers behind bars. He is offering a $1,000 reward for the safe return of the dogs.

Bingham said the couple were driving a blue minivan or SUV.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Mesa Police Department.
