PHOENIX – The three dogs that mauled a 10-year-old Arizona City boy have been euthanized.

Jason Hamilton had just gotten off the school bus when the two Rottweiler mixes and a pit bull mix attacked him Jan. 19.

The boy’s little brother and other children who were there ran to get help as the dogs bit Jason. Neighbors used baseball bats to beat the dogs off the boy and stop the attack.

Jason was flown to a Phoenix hospital. He suffered severe injuries, including a severed ear.

The dogs’ owner surrendered them after a 10-day quarantine, which is routine in dog-bite cases when it’s not clear if the dogs have had their rabies vaccinations. The dogs were later put down.

Investigators said it looked like the dogs got out of their yard by digging under a fence.

Their owner, who has children, said the dogs had never been vicious before. She reportedly was cited for several violations.

While it’s still not clear what prompted the attack, authorities said the dogs were not rabid. If they had been, they would have died while quarantined.

While several community members offered to adopt the dog, authorities said it was too big a risk.
