MARICOPA -- Police officers took a student into custody after a gun was found at a Maricopa middle school on Wednesday.

Maricopa police Sgt. Stephen Judd said the 13-year-old took the gun out of his bag to show his friends at a school bus stop and then shot a round up in the air. The boy then accidentally fired a second round at the ground.

"He took the magazine out and then he went to show his buddies that it was empty and pointed it at the ground then shot and it went off again," according to Judd.

Another student was slightly injured in the leg by flying rocks or dirt. That student was treated by the school nurse.

The teen then reportedly took the weapon to school.

After an investigation and lockdown at Desert Wind Middle School, Maricopa police officers recovered a semi-automatic handgun on a playground area and took the eighth-grade boy into custody.

The teen faces felony charges of misconduct with a firearm, endangerment and bringing a deadly weapon to a school campus.

The gun reportedly was stolen. Police are investigating where the boy got the gun.
