PHOENIX -- Teachers counting on their seniority for job security may soon be a thing of the past when new laws go into effect later this year.

Budget legislation signed by the governor eliminates preference given to tenured instructors when it comes to layoffs or re-hiring.

While some veteran teachers believe the changes will negatively impact teachers and students, the director of the Arizona School Boards Association says the new laws will give local school districts more flexibility when it comes to making choices for their classrooms.

The laws also remove the requirement that teachers receive contracts for the following school year by May 15, meaning they may not know whether they're out of a job or not until the last minute.
