GILBERT -- A student at a Gilbert elementary school was suspended after reportedly bringing a knife to school last week.
According to Principal William M. Roth II, it was reported that a student at Ashland Ranch Elementary School near Val Vista Drive and Ray Road brought a knife to school on Friday. The student's name was not released.
In accordance with the school district's policies and regulations, the student was suspended and was referred to the district hearing officer, who will determine the facts of the incident and make a recommendation regarding the appropriate discipline.
"Gilbert Public Schools' policies regarding possession of weapons on campus and student conduct are meant to keep our students safe," said district spokeswoman Dianne Bowers.
Roth said each case is considered on an individual basis. The disciplinary actions that could be taken include long-term suspension or expulsion.
A letter from the principal was sent home to parents on Tuesday.
