PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Senate wants voters to decide whether to gut the state's public campaign finance system and use the money for education.

The Senate approved the measure on an 18-11 vote on Monday.

The measure would effectively terminate the Clean Elections system first used in 2000 after being created by voters' approval of a 1998 initiative.

Critics of the public financing system contend it's wrong to use public money to fund the system. Supporters say it allows more people to run for office and reduces the appearance of potential corruption through acceptance of private contributions.

The measure next goes to the House.
