PHOENIX (AP) -- The latest AIMS scores are in and Arizona students showed improvement in reading and math, but had lower scores in writing.

The state Department of Education on Wednesday released the Arizona's Instrument to Measure Standards scores for those students who tested this past spring.

Students in grades 3 through 8 and in 10th grade are required to take the AIMS tests to measure their mastery of the subject materials.

Officials say 76 percent of students tested passed the reading requirement this year, a 3 percent increase over last year.

They say 59 percent of students passed the math assessment, up from 57 percent in 2010.

But the AIMS writing scores dipped to 56 percent compared to 71 percent last year.

Students must pass the AIMS tests to graduate high school.
