PHOENIX -- There is an endless variety of kitchen gadgets on the market, all of which are designed to make your cooking life easier.

While nobody needs everything, Frank Coloma, the resident chef at Sur la Table at Kierland Commons, says there are five things every kitchen should have.

Breville food processor
Coloma says a food-processor is a must-have item, but he particularly like the Breville. It has a special attachment for cutting french fries.

"This guy can literally take in whole Russet potatoes and in a matter of a split second really just break down that potato into french fries," he said.

Scanpan cookware
Made in Denmark, these pieces don't come cheap, but they are are virtually indestructible so they will last. The Scanpan pans are made of ceramic and titanium, both of which are known to be extremely hard materials.

"You can't scratch it," Coloma said. Not even with a metal spatula. More than just a sturdy pan, the Scanpan design is meant to cook just as well as the professional heavy-duty pots and pans.

Because there is no non-stick coating, you'll get an even sear. What's more, Scanpan pieces are both dishwasher and oven safe.

"It's very versatile," Coloma said. "You get all the benefits of nonstick [cookware]. You get a better pan to get even cooking.

"This pan will last you much longer. You don't have to worry about it deteriorating, warping, scraping off any of the coating because it's not a coating."

Corn-on-the-cob zipper
This one is pretty self-explanatory. You'll never have to use a knife to saw corn off the cob again.

"It really removes all the kernels with such ease," Coloma said.

Garlic Peeler
Garlic is fabulous. The odor it leaves on y our hands is not. This tool quickly peels garlic cloves without leaving your hands smelly.

KitchenAid mixer
Watch pretty much any cooking shoe and chances are you'll see a KitchenAid mixer somewhere. There's a reason for that.

The KitchenAid mixer has a variety of attachements and accessories that allow the appliance to almost anything but sing and dance. In addition to being a standard mixer, it also can be a food grinder, a pasta roller and cutter, a fruit and veggie strainer, a roto slicer with shredder, a citrus juicer, an ice cream makers and a ravioli make. How's that for versatile?

While gadgets are fun, Coloma says you shouldn't get carried away. Stick to the gadgets that work for and and the meals you tend to make. Kitchen goodies do you no good if you don't use them.
