PHOENIX -- The ultimate challenge for any teacher is truly connecting with students. Otherwise, there is little hope of reaching them. Our Silver Apple Award goes to a teacher at Queen Creek Middle School willing to do most anything to make that connection and the kids just love him for it.
To call the students at Queen Creek Middle School enthusiastic would be an understatement. They were ecstatic to see 3TV's camera at their assembly but also naturally curious why we were there.
"One of your teachers here at Queen Creek Middle School is one of the best in the state," said Patti Kirkpatrick during the all-school assembly. "You know him - it's Mr. Adey."
Six grade math teacher Kevin Adey walked down the bleacher steps clearly shocked and thrilled. It's not often teachers get this kind of reaction from students not to mention being singled out as one of only eight teachers statewide to receive the 3TV Silver Apple Award. Program sponsor, Ace Air was on hand to award Mr. Adey with $500 to use in his classroom.
No surprise Mr. Adey shared the tribute with the other teachers at Queen Creek. "This is as much your award as it is mine," said Mr. Adey during the surprise assembly. An award one of his students, Myah Sanders, nominated him for.
"He makes math my favorite subject by the way he teaches it. He really motivates me to keep going," said Sanders. "He's very funny and makes sure math is fun for us."
Mr. Adey is kind of a performer. "I took acting in college and it's paid off here to put on a routine and keep their attention," said Adey. "We're competing with video games and other things."
And when he sees the light bulb go off he says with a smile, "it's like winning a race."
